Saturday 16th May 2026

Weather: 13.5°C Humidity: 99%
Areas of morning cloud, valley fog, and frost clearing through the morning before returning again overnight. Light southeasterlies.

River Flow: 33.7 cumecs (m³/s)

The river was very clear again this morning. I stopped by the main bridge and counted at least 3–4 anglers already with lines in the water. The mornings have been starting off cloudy and foggy before clearing away to sunny conditions by mid-morning.

Fishing has slowed a little once the sun gets up, but anglers who are putting in the effort, covering plenty of water, and focusing on the deeper runs are still finding success. Reports are still showing a mix of recovering fish, although more fresh silver fish are gradually starting to move into the system.

Brennan made the trip over from Aussie for a week of fishing. By all accounts it had been tough going at times, but he still managed to get onto a few fish, including a stunning brown trout. It was great catching up with him and getting almost daily updates on how things were fishing around the river. Despite what his hat may have suggested, it definitely wasn’t telling the truth in this case!

I posted on Facebook last night that we’ve restocked a range of Loon Outdoors products, along with the NZ strike indicator material that we’d been out of for a little while.

We’ve also just received a massive top-up of Wapsi fly tying materials, which plenty of people have been patiently waiting on. This time of year is perfect for getting behind the vise and stocking up on flies for the winter season.

I spent the evening at home tying up some slightly smaller bugger patterns for the shop. With the river being so clear lately, those smaller flies should be ideal.

Looking ahead to the coming week, we’re expecting much the same conditions, although hopefully with a bit more cloud cover through the mornings and into the day. There’s also the chance of a few showers next weekend, which would definitely be welcomed around the region.

Monday I’ll be heading out on the water with Rosie to try and get into a few fish ourselves, as I haven’t been able to get out for a little while now. I’m definitely looking forward to getting the feet wet again and having the rod back in hand. I’ll report back on Tuesday with how we got on.

Tight lines everyone!
