A customer walked in with his trousers tucked into his lucky bright red socks and greeted us before saying "it's another day in paradise" and he's absolutely right. We live in paradise with many places to explore on foot, bike, or kayak and don't get us started on the fishing! There's plenty of rainbow trout in the Tongariro with the odd brown if you look out for them along the edges, and those out there today are doing well with small nymphs under a dry fly or small indicator, fishing along the edges or riffles.
Boat anglers on the big lake are steady on the increase as the days continue to lengthen and warm up! Toby's and Tassie Devils are heading out the door lately, customers indicate that it's a must to have a variety of lures handy in orange, pink, green, and the classic black/gold combo. Despite the wind that has been lingering it is possible to find isolated spots which are calmer but be prepared to launch further from your usual ramp and keep an eye on the conditions.
Didymo Dave stopped on by the shop for a catch up and generously provided us with some more flies! These are available in store only so be in quick before they're all gone.
Rosie has been on an absolute fishing stomp through the Plateau covering the Tongariro and surrounding streams including the lakes, and has since discovered the highs and lows of the epic ride that is fly fishing 😋
She has now kicked off her journey into the Spring season utilising dry/dropper and thus far is coming up with the goods! Grinning from ear to ear as she is pleased with the results using a technique that is new to her.

Her chosen dry is the Later Skater #12 for visibility, plus its ability to stay on top if you need to go with a slightly heavier nymph. Pole Position #14 or a green caddis trailing the dry.
