Weather: Light winds, sun and cloud at around 15°C

Tongariro River Flow: 32.5 cumecs (m³/s)

The combination of weather and river flow is beautiful today before the forecast rain tomorrow, which should see a fresh run of fish following the pressure change, flow rise and darker conditions.

We've had good reports today from those out there using natural green caddis, hare and coppers and the odd fish on smaller, lighter coloured glo bugs. Fresh fish pods seem to be sporadic still as expected, with no consistent runs just yet.

Wally and I headed out to the Hinemaiaia on Tuesday morning and were surprised at the lack of fresh fish following the high flows from last week. We found a few resident fish after moving around and speaking to other anglers who were finding the same, it's just a matter of time until the river is packed with fresh runners.  That being said, from reports from other anglers I have spoken to, fresh fish have been caught everyday, so it's a matter of covering lots of water and persisting with heavy flies to get down there into view.

For those braving the early mornings seem to be having great results and for those finding the new lies which the river has provided us following our big flood event last week. A large amount of silt has been washed out, creating some nice deep holes in places! Watch out for the new snags!

Gary has been out using his deadly slushies and caddis and getting the results. His early morning sessions have picked up some good fresh fish, but not in great numbers just yet as he reports.

Our new Rio Premier Gold Max Fly Line has come into its own as one of the hot replacements of the Rio Grand, which has been a winter-favourite line for many the past few years and is now discontinued.  The Gold Max is compact and powerful, with a short head and full-size heavy weight to carry bulkier flies and rigs with ease. The short front taper powerfully turns over bulky flies and heavier indicator setups while the short rear taper improves shooting on longer distance casts. It's a great all-rounder line for the now winter season, for those heavy beaded flies to cut through the heavier flows! Bring your reel in-store and we will load you up with free backing and spool your new fly line free with every new line purchase.

Keep enjoying the fishing team!
