The wind has been driving everyone mad lately, but the fishing has been surprisingly good. It looks like the recent rain has brought another push of fresh fish through the system.
Earlier this week, we had a serious downpour that blew out the smaller rivers. They should be running nicely now. Clear, but still holding a bit of colour.
My dad, Charlie (aka Dinny), braved the wind on Thursday and landed seven solid fish all on a fly I've been tying up and getting him to test. He used the same pattern again and caught all of his fish on it. If you’re in the shop, ask me about it. I’ll be tying some up to have available soon.
Neil was also out during the week with his spey set up, landing some stunning fish
I headed out earlier today and met up with Sam, Neil, Cameron, and Jono for a fish on the Tongariro, one last session before Sam makes the big move down south. Sam’s a close friend of the shop, and he’s done a bunch of video reports for us at Sporting Life Turangi. Hopefully, we’ll still get a few more reports from him once he’s settled down there!
We had an incredible day, with all of us landing a good number of fish. The water was absolutely perfect. It seems the rain earlier in the week pushed some nice, fresh fish up the system.
Looking ahead, the lakes are starting to fish really well across all methods. We’re also topping up our lake gear in-store, including a fresh batch of Pat Swift flies, with a few new patterns added for harling.
We’ve also noticed a real increase in mayfly hatches. Even today! And they’re bigger than usual for this time of year, which is exciting as we head into the warmer months.
Now’s a great time to get prepped for the summer season so you can hit the water as soon as the opportunity strikes. With hatches becoming more frequent, having your gear ready to go is key. Everything’s online too, so feel free to browse or come in and chat to us about a new setup or anything else you might need.
Enjoy the sunshine and tight lines, everyone!
