Tongariro River Flow: 36.3 cumecs (m³/s)
The rivers in the region have settled into perfect fishing conditions following the spout of heavy rain on Wednesday and Thursday that saw the Tongariro spike to just under 400 cumecs on Wednesday. The water is still holding a nice little bit of colour which calls for pink eggs and slushies, green caddis and big profiled stoneflies on the nymphs and medium profiled streamers in olive, browns and spawning-trigger purples, pinks, greens and blues.
We should see a fresh push of silver fish in the system following the flush of water we've had. Early mornings are reporting well for those swinging and battling the iced-over ferrules as the fish begin running at first light. As the river begins to clear and drop further, with sunny conditions present for the coming week, profile of flies and tippet thickness should go down accordingly. Try a smaller, natural coloured indicator in low clear conditions so you remain invisible to the fish.
We have a great range of Patagonia fleeces and warm clothing in store to keep you toasty on the river as there have been some very cold starts, with plenty more cold snaps on the way! Don't underestimate the numbers of layers you need on those cold days, especially fishing shaded spots. The new Guideline Experience Waterproof Rolltop - 21L is a great option for day missions with room for water, food, extra layers and more, rolled up in a fully waterproof bag. Also features a rod tube holder on the side for carrying an extra rod for those who nymph up and swing their way home! Great for the backcountry missions in summer too.
Keep enjoying the fishing guys and girls, see you out there!
