Saturday 4th October 2025

Weather: Heavy rain easing into showers on and off into the afternoon, with scattered thunderstorms. Highs of 14°C and low winds!

Tongariro River Flow: 40.1 cumecs (m³/s)

The heavy rain and thunderstorms have seen customers diving into the shop this morning! For those who have been on the river today report good numbers of recovering fish to the net as they move over to slower water in the slightly elevated flows. Orange Glo Bugs and Green Caddis. The Rain will bring the level up slightly but hopefully not blow anything out. This is definitely spring weather.

Today has been fantastic for the ones that stuck out the pouring rain and thunder. But with the extra water and colour coming through from the dump of rain we hope to see those late runners coming through.

Roman from Tasmania was out during the thunderstorm and got his first Rainbow! Hopefully he has caught the bug and will be coming back!

Tim and myself (Niamh) went out to Lake Rotoaira on Friday and had a blast. It was a tougher start and not much activity, but working our way through the fly box and moving around we managed to start hooking up. Lots of smaller fiery rainbows. The dark clouds definitely threatening the rain, but managed to hold off until mid afternoon.

Looking forward to the week ahead we are still looking at some heavy showers but there should be some gaps with sun coming through. As we transition into full spring we will changing up the flies and testing what the fish are interested in. If they start rising maybe testing to see if they are interested in something like an emerger or even a little dry which you may get some luck on.

New Instore:
Instore we have just gotten some telescopic boat nets in which will make a huge difference in landing those fish for those hitting the lakes now. We also have some leggy nymphs which are performing well on lakes such as Otomangakau and will definitely be something to try on the river, so pop on in and ask us about them and we will sort you out.

Lost item notice:

An Epic fly rod 5wt with a speedline reel has been lost on the Hinemaia on the 2nd September. If you find this please please drop it in-store or contact us so that we can try get this back to the owner. We always appreciate when people drop in lost property especially something as important as a rod and reel as it is always devastating for the owner.

Tightlines everyone!
