Weather: 15°C, cloudy and showers for the rest of the day.
Tongariro River Flow: 35.4 cumecs (m³/s)
We probably don't need to mention the very below average summer weather that has sadly been wrecking havoc on the north island and the fishing for the past week or so. Turangi has handled it well, with the Tongariro mostly remaining very fishable, with a good bit of colour and fish stacking up on the edges in sheltered, gentle flow places. People have reported seeing browns and rainbows hugging the edges, still taking large profiled nymphs and streamer patterns. Not quite the sight fishing we had anticipated for the summer but sight fishing none the less!
The local rivers are likely to slightly fluctuate still over the next few days as the rain showers continue but should begin to drop and subside on Tuesday looking ahead to the weather forecasts.
We had a great report from young anglers Mac and Ashton hitting the local stream mouths earlier in the week and finding good numbers of smelting fish taking small smelt patterns and woolly buggers. Great work lads!

Night fishing has still been turning up good numbers of recovering fish, with the condition factors slowly improving by the day as they continue to feed up. Brown trout should be making their way up the rivers now following the flow increase, as they begin to start thinking about spawning in the tributaries which have swelled allowing them access to the small creeks.
Neil reports that every time he's been out recently he's always had at least one fish come up to the dry, with great success on the Woomfahs and Para Madam X flies, with plenty of fish taking small droppers. The little fish have also appeared in the rivers, with explosive eats which is always good fun!
Good weather is on the way at last from Tuesday/Wednesday this week with some sunshine at last, so we should see the insect life increase, with a good cicada hatch and hopefully more terrestrial action on the surface. Lacemoth season is just around the corner and we have been seeing lots of small nymphs in the garden with the occasional adult, so it's not long until that fun way of fishing is upon us again!
The weekend is looking good for fishing the Taupo region, so come see us in store to find out what's working best where!
See you out there team!
