Sunday 30th April 2023

Today started out gloomy with low cloud and it hasn't changed much through the morning. No rain to speak of as yet but a shower or two is predicted for later in the day, the wind has stayed away for now too but there is some movement in the Kowhai trees outside the shop.
It's not a bad day to be out on the rivers with reports trickling in of chrome fresh runners showing up on there migration to the spawning grounds. It's still early days but with a good drop of rain forecast in the coming week we are all waiting in anticipation for more of these strong fighting Rainbows to show up in numbers.
With these fat hard fighting fish around it's definitely time now for me to drag out my trusty 8wt Sage Sonic and team it up with my favourite nymphing line. The RIO Premier Grand line has the taper I prefer for biffing out heavier indicator rigs. This combo has proved itself over the few seasons and will remain my goto for a while longer. This rod also handles the RIO Fathom sinking line like a boss both in the river swinging a streamer or dropping a tasty booby fly into the depths of the Tongariro delta.

The extra flow currently in the Tongariro is at 54cumec and is expected to finish this Tuesday the 2nd of May. While still fishable it has been a challenge for most so a drop back in flow will be most welcome.

Theresa is on the river today with her posse in tow so we are expecting to hear of her successes tomorrow when she will be back on deck with Tarn.
