We have been greeted with yet another stunning day here in Turangi with clear skies and very little wind. The Tongariro is flowing cold and clear sitting at 31.6 m3/sec. As per usual at this time of year small size 16 nymphs fished under a dry fly or small indicator will be the key to success today. Yesterday evening saw a rather large mayfly hatch on the Tongariro which frequent flyer, Karl aka Pesty and I took advantage of. Size 14 Parachute Adams and the ever-faithful Category 3 Tricky Situation also in size 14 were simply too irresistible for these fish to resist.
This morning I was abruptly awoken by a ringing phone and the sweet voice of shop dad, Neil suggesting we should enjoy the sun before work this morning and go find some smelting fish around Lake Taupo. The small pat swift smelt patterns above did the damage this morning. A couple feisty rainbows certainly don't go a miss before opening the shop. It wasn't nonstop action, but a few warmer sunny days should get both the smelt and trout active.
