Sunday 5th June 2022

It has been a chaotic couple of days for the Sporting Life crew with a large influx of anglers and visitors to town. The shop has been absolutely flat stick and a big thank you to everyone on the team for dealing with the madness!

The fishing has been good but hasn't really fired as of yet, although today may be the day it kicks off with the river looking absolutely perfect and there were some great fish moving through first thing. Yesterday there was a large amount of very dirty silty water down the bottom section of the Tongariro well below the bottom Grace Rd access yet to clear after the flood caused some of the banks to collapse however there are certainly some cracking fish making their way up through the system! I shot out first thing this morning with Johnny and Tarn and we had a ball with some beautiful chrome rainbows hammering flies on the swing. We will be out and about tomorrow so fingers crossed the fish keep on coming. The river is very busy with 16 cars at the first Grace Rd carpark alone this morning!! Remember that etiquette is crucial when the river is busy like this, if someone is already fishing the spot you wanted to check out go and have a chat and see what they are up to - if they are upstream nymphing jump in below them and vice versa if they are swinging downstream. A few seconds of conversation and everyone goes fishing happily so please keep that in mind as the river pressure ramps up.

Call in store for the latest info and reports from the river and we will get you kitted up and ready to get into the fish, its only going to get better from here!
