October came and went, and we are now into the tail end of what has been a great spring for fishing the central plateau. The lake fishing has been producing well for boaties making the most of the great weather conditions we have had while the river has continued to produce some nice fresh fish which is awesome for so late in the season! Wet lining with small woolly bugger patterns and fishing small nymphs under a dry fly has been the main producers in the river.

The lake edge fishing has also started to produce some fish around the stream mouths that enter Lake Taupo. This fishing will only get better and better as the weather heats up and casting to fish that are herding up shoals of smelt is a great way to spend a sunny afternoon! Pat Swift smelt patterns are the flies of choice and a stripping basket is a necessity if you want to maximize your casting distance while wading around the lake edges. The Ahrex Flexi Stripper is my favourite stripping basket on the market, it is super lightweight and low profile, and the silicone pegs keep the line organised and tangle free. We have a limited range of Ahrex flexi strippers that have been dressed up in a super slick Loon Outdoors colour combo. These will make a great new piece of kit if you are looking to hit the lakes this summer.

Looks like more patchy showers and not much wind leading into the weekend so it will be perfect for those wanting to make the most of the lake fishing. Neil, Rosie and I will be covering the store across the weekend so come in for a chat and pick our brains about the latest on all the local fishing at present.
