The fishing has been good on the Tongariro recently, with solid rainbows hitting the net. Fish are moving throughout the system, with customers reporting catching from the lower reaches below the bridge, middle areas in town, and upper reaches above the city. Throughout the day small nymphs, such as small pheasant tail nymphs, small Hare and Coppers, paired with a heavier fly to get to the bottom, such as UV hotspot Green caddis or a Dave fly have been the most effective rig. Streamers and wet-lining woolly buggers in sizes 08-10 have done well, especially in olive colour variations. If you're willing to stay on the river until dark, you will be rewarded with a substantial evening rise starting around 8 pm. Although both mayflies and caddis have been hatching, the fish seem to key in on mostly mayflies while rising. We suggest Parachute Adams in sizes 10-16.
Come into the shop and pick up some of the hot flies!
