Tuesday 16th May 2023

After a period of sunshine, it is now an overcast day in Turangi. The Tongariro is the lowest it has been in many months flowing at 37.8m3/sec and in tip top condition for fishing. Neil and I hit the river yesterday for a day of trout spey fishing. Neil was armed with his Sage Trout Spey HD 11'3" 4wt paired with the Sage Trout Spey Reel and myself with the Winston Microspey 11'0" 4wt and the Abel Rove 7/9 reel.

It was great to see a good number of very well-conditioned fresh rainbows moving through the river as well as a beautiful brown for Neil to cap the day off perfectly. the orange bead olive woolly bugger was certainly a standout performer. I got to have a play with the new Rio Mini Max Power skagit head and boy howdy does that thing fly! With out a doubt my new favourite trout spey line. We have just received stock of these new lines so be sure to check them out!

If this cool temperature sticks around, we could be in for some excellent early season winter fishing and if yesterday was anything to go off it could be another cracker of a year.
