Tongariro River Flow: 24.3m3/sec

Weather: Warm & Sunny

There are some fantastic fish about on the Tongariro and Tauranga-Taupo rivers at present and if you watch closely, you will notice the odd mayfly hatch or rising trout.

Nick and I ventured out into the wind yesterday, starting with the Tongariro which saw Nick land a beautiful rainbow which was hooked on one of the Category 3 favourites: Gummers Carpet Caddis BTB #12

Claudio and I dusted off the lighter gear and got ourselves rigged up for some dry/dropper fun in the shallows/riffles, we soon spotted Gabe from the track who was on the water and picking up fish on small nymphs run below a dry. We decided to continue on together and fished our way upriver, picking up good numbers seeing a mix of both fresh and darker fish. As we rolled on to midafternoon, we each had fish giving the dry a nudge, which was greatly welcomed and something we will be more alert to next time huh 😉

My rod of choice for dry/dropper is the Sage Trout LL rod 9ft #6 which brings me great joy, it's medium casting action allows for a relaxed approach on the water, presenting smaller flies to the spookiest of fish and if this weather stays as it is through to summer, this rod will always be the first pick.
