** It has been brought to our attention that the Genesis Energy website has not been reading the Tongariro river flow since July 25th. Although we are unable to give you the exact m3/sec we will keep you updated to the best of our ability until it is fixed**
The river is still very low and crystal clear as we speak as we speak. We have had spits and spats over the last couple days with a light drizzle falling right now but it is nowhere near enough to affect the river flow. The fishing over the last few days has been fairly good though and we've seen a number of good-sized fresh fish moving through the system. It seems that the majority of fresh fish are occupying the water from the town pools down, with all the examples in this report being caught in the middle of town. Swinging and nymphing are both producing fish but as usual with clear water it pays to scale down in fly size for both techniques.
The Rio Skagit Mini Max Power heads came into their own yesterday turning over the sink tips and flies effortlessly to give the best set up for the swing.
Small sparse flies were the name of the game in the clear water. Below is a little look at my recent fly rotation with a standard size 8 woolly bugger above to give you an idea of the size of the below flies.
We have some rain forecast for tomorrow so we will wait and see if it eventuates. We will keep you updated if there is any change in river flow. Tim and I are instore today and he is whipping up more of his trailer hook rabbit flies which have proven deadly over the weekend, as well as a full range of slushy's that'll be lethal if this rain puts a spike in the river flow. Come in and get geared up!
