Tongariro River Flow: 27.7m3/sec

Weather: Mostly Sunny

It's a warm morning in Turangi seeing the thick fog slowly lift off the lake revealing a blue sky which will remain for now... As the forecast for Thursday indicates more rain, so enjoy the sunshine on the lakes or rivers while it's here!

Harry caught his first trout on his brand new Redington Minnow rod whilst fishing with his dad Derek. Great stuff, Harry!

This season I've been spending more time fishing the lakes loch style, which is a super fun and active way to fish. If you haven't come across this style of fishing before it basically involves drifting from a boat in the direction of the wind whilst casting ahead of you. This method allows one to cover more water and often a rectangular drogue is used to slow the drift down as required. I enjoy fishing with a trio of small wooly buggers and stripping them with either an intermediate or di3 sinking line, the takes can be explosive and often time the fish are in great condition and numbers. I've been using my Sage R8 9'6" 7wt paired with the RIO Aqualux Clear Intermediate and so far, I'm stoked with how well it casts and fishes, the extra rod length helps with long casts and has eliminated my worry over the rod making contact with the boat when fish come in prior to netting.

If loch style fishing is something you want to try, feel free to come in and chat with Tarn or myself as we are both passionate about this technique and can help answer any questions.
