Tongariro River Flow: 37.9(m3/sec)
Weather: Scattered rain, becoming widespread and possibly heavy around midday. Northerlies.
It's another overcast, rainy day in Turangi today. Reports have been few and far between. But the people who have been getting out, are still having a good time. The river has been quiet, so there has been no need to get up too early and get to your favourite spot first. The fish have been taking to a wide variety of flies. For me, the C3 Habanero UV Lavender has been really proving its worth, landing many fish on any river I have been on. It has been between this fly, Slushies and Mayfly or Caddis imitations.
I've noticed there has been a bit of bug activity on the water, and the fish have been rising in the tail outs or shallower water. I had a day a couple of weeks ago, where there were 4 fish landed on the Adams Parachute #12 dry fly. This has got me very excited for the coming weeks, as the closed rivers begin to open, and the back country days start-up.
Those on the wet line have been doing well with small natural flies. Word from Samual Nelley is the Pat Swift Olive/Natural Bugger (with a yellow eye) has been doing the damage, and if it doesn't, blame Sam.
The Two rivers close to Taupo have been fishing well. The Waitahanui has been hit or miss, but the condition and freshness of the fish have been very good. The mornings or evenings have been fishing the best on these rivers.
We have topped up some great summer flies, in large and smaller sizes. We also have a great range of summer wet wading clothing and accessories in, from Patagonia and the likes.
If you're curious about learning how to fly fish, looking and upskilling, or just want to find some new spots, our guides are starting to get plenty of bookings for summer. So be sure to get in sooner rather than later to get a date.
As you may know, we are due for a fair amount of rain today and tomorrow. So, let's see what this does. Hopefully the good fishing continues, and we start to see some new fish in the rivers. We will have a new report in the next day or so, to give you guys the lowdown on what's going on.
Good luck everyone,
Any photos or reports are greatly appreciated.
