The Tongariro river has dropped since Sunday night's large rainfall. We are getting right back into exceptional early summer fishing. Throughout the day, the best method continues to be double nymphing; however, wet lining can be an effective technique, especially in the tailouts of pools. In the evening, we have good hatches of mayflies in sizes 16-10 and Caddis in sizes 14-10 throughout the system.
Throughout the day, while nymphing, we suggest fishing small naturals such as Pheasant tail nymph variations and Hare and Copper variations. Egg flies also produced some fish off the Tongariro River.
For fishing dry flies, variations of the Parachute Adams are in sizes 10-14, along with Elk Hair Caddis Dry in sizes 12-14.
Yesterday, I went out for the evening rise and caught a nice 45 cm rainbow on a size 12 parachute, Adams. During the fight, the hook's shank broke, and the only thing that held the fly together was the Semperfli Nano Silk that the fly was tied to. I fought the fish for five minutes without the nano silk breaking and was able to land the fish. This is an absolutely incredible estimate of the strength of Semperfli nano silk.
Come into the shop and pick up some of the hot flies!
