Weather: Periods of rain, with possible thunderstorms. Easterlies, strong in exposed places, changing northerly this afternoon.
Tongariro River Flow: 24.5(m3/sec)
More rain is coming down today, with more than forecasted so far. Things are looking good on the river currently. With reports of lots of good fish in the river, many fish around the 4-5IB region have been landed.
The Hinemaiaia is rewarding most anglers who stop by. The TT mouth has really been picking up for most recently as-well, the reports from further up the river have been great. Still plenty of browns being caught.
This brown had the Sage Trout LL #5 at full bend. Caught on a pink bead carpet caddis by C3 Flies.
A lovely fresh Rainbow caught on the two-hander in the lower Tongariro River.
In store, we have just put out a good range of winter fishing rods. Some powerful #6 and #8 weight rods, at a very good price. Like the guideline stoked rod ($379.99). It is by far the best value I have found in a rod, extremely good performance for any situation. The #6 or #8 would be able to handle heavy Tongariro nymphs but also lay a delicate cast when needed.
We have topped up on Slushies, C3 Flies, and wooly buggers. Plus, some winter socks and thermals as we roll in to the winter wading.
Remember the back country is still open. It's my favourite time to get out during the end of season, when the fish start moving through all the surrounding systems. Recently I have found great numbers of excellent condition fish, and lots of browns in very decent size. UV style flies have been working extremely well. Like the C3 Prince of UV or UV PT Ice Blue.
It's a great time to make the trip to Turangi. Winter is well and truly on it's way. Come get amongst it.
