Tongariro River Flow: 160.3(m3/sec) and dropping fast!
Weather: Cloudy periods, with a few showers. Westerlies.
The heavy rain has struck again!
We have had a 392(m3/sec) spike overnight, although it has retreated quickly, already dropping by 200(m3/sec).
We have been set up extremely well for the coming weekend, as the fishing in the last couple weeks has been tough for many. We are hoping this fresh brings in some new fish and helps chill them out a bit.
Recently the low/clear conditions have reverted anglers back to more summery tactics, like smaller naturals, such as Caddis, Pole Positions (C3 Flies), and Smaller wet flies in brown and olive. Although with this coloured water we should have for a week or so, larger glo-bugs like slushies should be on the menu again. I've already heard reports of them working today.
The river should be very fishable tomorrow, just remember to use a fair amount of weight in these higher flows.
Niam and I took a mission over to the Wanganui the other day, which was also very low. The fishing was extremely tough, but we did manage to sight fish this nice jack in some side water. I also picked up a smaller rainbow on my euro gear.
Niamh and Rosie also went on an after-work mission down to the Tongariro on Sunday, they had a good time with a fair few very nice fresh rainbows using caddis and H&C patterns.
In store, things have been ticking along nicely. We've just had a slushy material top up, hopefully some pre-tied slushies show up tomorrow, although I have tied a couple dozen myself to see the anglers through for today. We still have plenty of bombs in stock, so remember weight will be key for the next few days.
Niamh has been busy at the bench, tying up her pecker and parrot flies which should really prove their worth in this coloured water.
We look forward to hearing about how the fishing goes during the week. Send us through your photos.
Tight Lines everyone,
