The smaller local lakes have remained unseasonably high due to the recent rain over the holiday season. This has resulted in lower fish numbers to the net, reported by most anglers, but the fish are very much still in there, and in good condition.
So patience, trying plenty of different spots and natural patterns are essential to find those elusive bigger fish. As damsel activity slowly increases, fishing small damsel patterns on long light tippet leaders can be productive when the sun shines.

On the big Taupō lake edges, fish continue to smelt close to shore and hit green beetles as they fall from vegetation overhanging the water. Big terrestrial patterns are not quite in full swing as we wait for those high 20°C days to bring out those big insects in good numbers.

Reports from those trolling and jigging the lake have resulted in good numbers of fish, mostly in great condition as they feed heavily on smelt and insects. It's a great time to harvest these Taupō lake fish for the smoker, of which we have smokers and wood chips in store to fill up your freezer and enjoy a range of delicious smoked trout recipes! The very high fish numbers in the Taupō system can more than handle you taking your daily limit of 6 trout per angler. Get into it guys and girls!
A few of the Sporting Life crew plus friends and family have snuck out after work for a night fish and have been very successful (When the wind has allowed) This is a great time of year for those working during the day to get out for a relaxing fish with beautiful views, great fishing and many laughs.
Charlie aka Dinny (Niamh's dad) got into some stunning fish the other night landing a great brown as well as managing to not only hook 2 fish at the same time but land them.

River fishing has been productive during the overcast days and small spikes in flow following rain to freshen up the fish. When the sun has been out anything small, natural and leggy have been doing well. The dry fly takes have also started to pick up with us all waiting especially on the cicada to come out!
Neil has been out on the river getting quite the number of fish in the net!
