I had a day off yesterday so met up with Shop Dad Neil, Anne and Mickey on the Tauranga-Taupo. It was bitterly cold, but the company, fishing and scenery was well worth the chilblains!
I mostly played net girl for Anne who was peeling fish from the deep runs. The fishing was slow first thing in the morning but found that adjusting the indicator was key, casting upstream and stripping (without causing indicator to sink) maintaining good contact with the nymphs and striking when the indicator twitched as fish were gently taking nymphs. Once the sun was fully up the fish were super active and aggressively hitting large streamers on the strip. Heavy caddis nymphs, glo-bugs and wooly buggers working well.
