It's a day for spey fishing on the Tongariro! That's what we would be out doing if we weren't in the shop today, so it may as well you guys!š A few customers have expressed their concerns over fishing the higher flows in regards to wading safety, and the river's fishability. Our advice is to bring a wading staff to assist with mobilisingĀ over the rocks/stones which could be slippery, and to gauge river depth when murky. The river condition is 100% fishable and some may find it preferrable, seeking aggressive trout willing to take a streamer pattern. Nymphing and or dry/dropper is expected to work without a doubt but has been challenging and requiring a lot effort for many, but it's in these experiences one is rewarded in knowledge.Ā
Claudio and I have been enjoying the river mouth fishing, still using smelt patterns, lumo doll flies, and wooly bugger patterns.Ā
